BMW-i - remove all barriers to start innovation

BMW has built up a reputation as a leading car manufacturer when it comes to combining fuel efficiency with the joy to drive a dynamic car. "Efficient dynamics" is their self-explanatory claim.

To take the next step to be prepared to make offers for future mobility based on electricity or other energy sources, BMW set up an innovation team to drive this process and to finally present concepts to the public at coming car shows.

So far, so common. The exceptional/radical thing about their approach to tackling this issue is, the guidance, top management gave to the innovation team, namely

NONE!
The cars/concepts were to be developed from a blank sheet of paper.
No restrictions to be considered coming from production side, materials, cost.
Just start from scratch, turn the world of mobility upside down, reinvent mobility, push the boundaries.

Some concepts could already be seen in 2010 (the i8 and i3) and further will follow.

I wonder, where in Panasonic such a courageous, open, risk taking approach to create breakthrough innovation is to be found... at least this information is not shared, I assume.

And furthermore, see how open the project progress is shared publicly, what discussion and by that further external input it triggers:

Any thoughts/ideas, colleagues? :-)

All info about the project, you need plus further promoting it to the public gathering additional input from the outside. Very smart approach imho...
